Political Rout? Or inevitable conclusion?

Tuesday’s romp was brought to you by a simple reality: you cannot build a lasting governmental coalition without a moral compass to anchor it.

The Trump coalition is inherently fickle (notice how many of its original supporters are now openly campaigning against Trump), because rather than shared principles, it was built on personality, grievance, and transactional politics; the dialogue of conscience replaced by agreeable grift. When grievance is the central platform and allegiance to a personality is the litmus test for candidates, the result is a slate of candidates who easily win primaries but fall short in general elections.

The GOP put forward deeply morally flawed or wholly unprepared candidates, because they have rebuilt a party in the image of a man. At the highest levels, countless true conservatives have been driven out, the platform has been gutted, and voices of morality silenced. In its place is an unmoored remnant of a party with the empty trappings of all the things that it once held in substance.

A movement that has no stable underpinning of shared political understanding -beyond the desire for power- and lacks an ethical framework will always struggle to hold ground. You cannot win elections with anger as the shared value and personal fealty as the highest qualifier.

Anger fades. Personalities gain and lose popularity. Principles last.

Principles… If conservatives want to have any influence on a federal level, they need to find theirs.
