Clancy Mistrial, Injustice or Genius?

BRIEFLY ON CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO CLANCY MISTRIAL… As social media fills with angst and outrage over the declaration of a mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy case, we should recognize the paradox.  We love instant gratification; something like a hung jury just doesn’t sit right with us.  Yet, the very systemic friction that creates such a result is something for which we should be grateful.  It is a bulwark that protects any of us, including those joining the digital mob, from becoming a victim of the potential tyranny such a mob represents.

The judiciary has terrible power, wielding the sword of God.  Thus, as every accused person is made Imago Dei, bearing God’s image, an extremely high burden of proof is demanded.  In moments like this, the Christian response may not be to rail for justice, but to recognize that such an outcome is the wheels of justice in motion.  We continue to trust in the judicial process in such a moment not to accept injustice or acquiesce to incompetence, but because we understand the weight of the proceedings.  Our confidence and submission are the Christian act of recognizing the constraining nature of due process.  

We ought to be grateful for our system; it is immeasurably superior to the swift, myopic, and ill-advised vengeance of the court of public opinion.  
Ultimately, we are reminded that God’s justice never fails; our trust is in Him.
