MORE THAN A MARCH, A DISTURBING MOVEMENT… That the 250th Anniversary of the United States’ founding would include a variety of disturbing images is not surprising, but the nature of a group of men marching through the nation’s capital in support of creating an ethnostate is one that should not be overlooked. Ideas have consequences, and thus bad ones should be pointed out. This Republic was founded on the principle that God created all men equal; to call for a “reclaiming” that rejects that ideal runs counter to history and good theology. Christian pulpits in America have a special duty to call white nationalism what it is: a damnable theological heresy.
Any attempt to rate the value of a human by their melanin count or the geography of their ancestry is a rejection of the Christian doctrine of the Imago Dei. Elevating genetics to the height of allegiance is more than foolish; it is making an idol and rebelling against the reality that every person is made in the image of the Creator. Racial supremacy is simply incongruent with Christian belief.
A dangerous trick of Satan is playing out in America. C.S. Lewis warned us that the devil always sends errors in pairs, hoping that we are so horrified by one that we blindly embrace the other. As secularists and progressives have made war on natural law, family, and objective truth, a void has been left in American society. Young men, especially those without a robust Christian foundation in their lives, have been left feeling culturally abandoned and empty of purpose. They are seeking order and meaning.
This has created an opening to offer a counterfeit, Christless conservatism, which claims to be a cure but is as poisonous as the ailment of leftist relativism. Ultimately, the progressive left and the ethnonationalist right are two sides of the same coin. The left reduces a man to sexual desires and group identity ranked by class and intersectionality; the ethnonationalist reduces a man to his cultural ancestry and group identity ranked by genetic purity. Both ideologies sinfully miss the mark and reduce the intrinsic value of humans for the purpose of seeking power.
Christians must be aware and boldly speak to a confused generation that just as you cannot be tricked into believing that the way to oppose racism is by embracing the radical agenda of the left, you cannot defeat the godlessness of the progressive left by embracing the godlessness of the supremacist right. If there is to be any hope for our culture, and for the wandering souls who are living in it, the Church must lead the way in rejecting false dichotomies. The answer for a nation is not found in radical ideology, left or right, in the purification of genetics, nor in the elevation of personal autonomy. The answer is the cleansing of sin by the blood of Jesus and bending the knee to His authority above all!
