Is this the end? Or, is that the wrong question?

As the book of Acts begins, the fledgling church finds itself asking the wrong question, foregoing a spiritual promise for a chance at temporal understanding. Jesus points them to outpouring of Pentecost. They want to know if this is when the Kingdom of Israel will be established. The Savior, by now quite accustomed to dealing with us humans, who just don’t “get it,” kindly reminds them that the times and epochs are not theirs to know. The Father has set all of these things, but they are asking questions that are beyond the scope of their assignment.

Instead of focusing on what the Kingdom of Heaven is planning for a Kingdom on Earth, Jesus wants them to know that their role will be the one for which they will be empowered in Jerusalem, the role of witnesses, or in the original language, martyrs.

We find ourselves today at another one of those moments. Is this end? We hear of war in the promised land, persecution of believers elsewhere, a Western church in decline; is this the end?

It certainly is not the end of prognosticating and profiting off the prophetic for those who are selling the wares of their insight into the things that we have already been told are beyond our grasp. The airwaves, social media feeds, bookstores, and pulpits are full of experts in that which our maker told us we can have no expertise.

What does it say about us that we will spend time, effort, and money attempting to learn things from the scriptures that the scriptures themselves tell us we cannot know? Alas, that “being like God” did not end when we were driven from the Garden.

Perhaps, Christ would remind us again. That’s not for us to know.

Our job is find a place and tarry in His presence until we are Spirit-filled and fully equipped for the thing to which we are called. We are to be His witnesses. We are to pour out our lives as His representatives.

Our mission is to carry the gospel, to represent Him, locally, regionally, and around the world.

The better question is, “How do we get that power?”

That part is for us to know.
