NO LAW CAN OVERCOME FAILURE AT HOME… Mandating the display of the Ten Commandments is the right thing to do in any classroom in the West. The South Carolina House (among a growing number of states) legislating this display acknowledges the reality that Western Civilization is firmly grounded upon God’s law. It is my hope that the Senate concurs and we see this become law. A society that removes the cornerstones upon which it is built cannot stand. Attempting to teach history, law, civics, or Western principles while ignoring the Ten Commandments is akin to studying football without explaining the measurements of the field or the manner of scoring. Each time students see this foundational document, they will be called to remember the transcendent nature of our foundational laws and be pointed to the Lawgiver.
However, a victory in the legislature is no remedy for failure in our homes. We may celebrate the publication of the Ten Commandments in our schools, but if God’s law is absent in the hearts of our children, the conversation at our tables, and in the lives of parents, we have gained precious little ground. The biblical mandate to instruct our children in God’s ways was never the primary duty of the civil authority, but of the parent. Teaching these words, instructing in His ways, and writing them on doorposts are all commands for the home. Demanding the state acknowledge a law that our children see us disregard or expecting them to read a poster we cannot explain—whether due to ignorance or apathy—is empty hypocrisy, not a moral victory. Plaques on walls are good. We need them. His Law on our hearts is better. We need that more
